Subscription vs No-Subscription Cardio Equipment: Three-Year Cost Framework

Quick answer

A three-year cardio-equipment cost record should not start with a product label such as “subscription” or “no subscription.” It should start with the exact hardware function the buyer needs, then separate hardware, required software, optional software, billing cadence, devices, sensors, delivery, return exposure, and unresolved costs.

The current documentary examples show four materially different paths:

  • a Schwinn IC4 can provide a local console workout without a paid subscription, while optional connected-platform costs depend on the selected service and device path;
  • JRNY App can be optional for compatible mobile-device equipment, while JRNY All-Access is a different tier required for the full experience on most BowFlex products with built-in touchscreens;
  • Zwift can be an optional connected environment, but the setup may require a supported display device, sensor, smart trainer, smart bike, or other hardware beyond the base equipment;
  • Peloton integrated hardware requires an All-Access Membership to access all Peloton content and applicable hardware features.

A known subtotal is not a complete ownership cost. A three-year scenario is not a forecast. A current subscription price is not a guaranteed renewal price. No paid subscription required is not the same as no app, account, internet, or future service dependency. A free qualifying membership is not a lifetime zero-cost guarantee. Hardware paths with different functions are not automatically comparable. No purchase or defer is valid.

No overall winner is stated: the evidence supports scenario records and boundaries, not a universal value or recommendation conclusion.

Scope and evidence boundary

This page is a pricing analysis for one decision: how required, optional, conditional, or absent paid software changes a three-year cardio-equipment scenario. It uses an Article-38-specific application of the published home-fitness total-cost framework, but it does not approve or freeze a project-wide shared total-cost method.

The page does not rank brands, platforms, classes, instructors, training quality, hardware quality, data accuracy, durability, privacy, or user outcomes. It also does not claim that local-console equipment is independent of every digital service. A product can work locally while still having optional apps, account features, firmware, online support, or future service dependencies.

The checked examples are bounded current source states, not the full market:

  • Schwinn IC4 local-console and optional connected-app paths;
  • JRNY App and JRNY All-Access membership paths;
  • Zwift membership and billing-policy paths; the accepted current FAQ did not expose a current price field during this recheck;
  • Peloton App price state and Peloton integrated-hardware path;
  • XTERRA FB180 with conditional free XF Connect membership or a separately paid XF Connect membership.

Each path has different functions. The arithmetic cannot establish a universal value winner when the services, hardware, metrics, household profiles, and fallback behavior are not equivalent.

Exact scenario records and checked date

Every cost row must identify:

  • exact hardware, seller, market, currency, and checked date;
  • normal-price field and promotion field as separate records;
  • software platform, exact tier, billing channel, and billing period;
  • whether software is required for the intended hardware experience, optional, conditionally included, or not used;
  • display device, sensor, account, internet, and accessory requirements;
  • ownership horizon and number of charged periods;
  • trial eligibility and whether the trial is excluded from the base case;
  • tax, delivery, return, financing, maintenance, and exit treatment;
  • every unknown that prevents a complete total.

The source-state examples were rechecked on September 13, 2026. The JRNY membership page listed JRNY App and JRNY All-Access separately. The Schwinn connected-app page described a full local workout experience with no paid subscription required. The Zwift membership FAQ exposed trial, renewal, refund, and profile rules but no current price field in the rendered page. The Peloton home-trial page listed current Cross Training hardware and the All-Access requirement, while accepted Peloton membership/setup/offer routes exposed conflicting or offer-specific fields. The XTERRA FB180 page showed current sale/reference fields and a free XF Connect membership claim.

What three-year means here

The horizon is exactly 36 months from the buyer’s chosen start date. Monthly billing uses 36 charged periods. Annual billing uses three charged periods. Current prices are repeated only as an explicit scenario assumption.

This article does not assume:

  • the platform keeps the same price for all 36 months;
  • a current promotion remains available;
  • the buyer qualifies for a new-member trial;
  • an annual plan remains offered or refundable;
  • hardware remains supported for the full horizon;
  • internet, device, app-store, account, or operating-system requirements remain unchanged;
  • the buyer uses the product for a particular number of sessions;
  • cancellation occurs at a particular date unless the scenario states it.

A three-year scenario is not a forecast. It is a transparent “what if current inputs repeated” calculation that must be refreshed if a price, tier, product, billing channel, or support condition changes.

Cost states and timing classes

Every line receives both an evidence state and a timing class.

Evidence state Meaning Numeric treatment
Verified current input Exact source, scope, currency, and checked date are recorded May enter the known subtotal
Scenario assumption Buyer deliberately chooses a future repetition, frequency, or amount May enter an assumption-dependent subtotal
Conditional Cost occurs only after a named event Keep in conditional exposure
Unknown Material amount is absent, conflicting, or not buyer-specific Never replace with zero
Excluded Deliberately outside the approved scenario Explain why exclusion does not distort the decision
Not applicable The cost genuinely cannot occur in the scenario Zero allowed only with a reason
Timing class Examples
One time Hardware, delivery, assembly, required display, sensor, mat, shoes, adapter
Recurring Membership, app, internet increment, service plan, storage
Per event Technician visit, battery replacement, moving service, part purchase
Conditional exposure Return freight, restocking, cancellation loss, reassembly, pickup
Terminal Disposal, haul-away, or separately justified resale proceeds

A zero is evidence, not a placeholder. “No paid subscription selected” can be zero only for the software line in that defined local-use scenario. It cannot silently zero out taxes, internet, devices, maintenance, delivery, or return exposure.

Formula and outputs

For one defined path:

known subtotal = verified one-time costs
               + verified recurring costs within 36 months
               + verified per-event costs already in the scenario

assumption-dependent subtotal = known subtotal
                              + current prices repeated as assumptions
                              + other explicit buyer assumptions

conditional exposure = costs triggered only by named events

unknown register = material amounts not monetized

A pricing record should publish four outputs:

  1. known subtotal;
  2. assumption-dependent subtotal;
  3. conditional exposure;
  4. unknown register.

“Complete total unavailable” is the correct result when a material input remains unknown. “Not comparable pending evidence” is the correct result when two paths cover different functions or cost classes.

Normal price versus promotion

The scenario preserves a seller’s reference field, current purchase field, coupon, bundle, trial, or first-time offer separately.

Do not:

  • turn a sale field into the evergreen normal price;
  • assume a crossed-out field is a verified normal price without context;
  • combine a price from one page with a return policy from another date without recording both checks;
  • subtract a trial unless eligibility and conversion behavior are documented;
  • treat a monthly financing payment as the hardware price;
  • use the lower of two conflicting official prices simply because it produces a cheaper scenario.

The current IC4 state demonstrates why this matters: the Schwinn comparison page and Schwinn connected-products collection exposed different current price fields. Both remain in the record.

Current hardware price state

Hardware path Current official source state Three-year treatment
Schwinn IC4 $799 on one official comparison route and $899 on another; $999 reference field Preserve a $799–$899 current hardware-input range; do not resolve the conflict by assumption
Peloton Cross Training Bike $1,695 on current U.S. home-trial route May enter as a current one-time input for that exact path, subject to checkout, tax, delivery, and availability recheck
XTERRA FB180 $179.99 current promotion and $249.99 reference field Keep promotion and reference scenarios separate

The Peloton home-trial page states that All-Access is required to access all Peloton content and applicable features on Peloton hardware. The FB180 listing shows a current promotion, reference field, Add to Cart, free shipping, and free XF Connect membership wording. None of those signals proves the buyer’s final checkout.

For the Schwinn hardware identity and its current source-state fields, see the bounded Schwinn IC4 analysis. That destination is descriptive context, not a substitute for the exact Article-38 price and cost records above.

Current membership price state

Platform/tier Current U.S. field Base treatment
JRNY App $11.99/month or $99/year Repeat monthly 36 times or annual three times as an assumption
JRNY All-Access $19.99/month or $149/year Repeat only for a hardware path that requires or deliberately uses this tier
Zwift No current price field exposed in the accepted FAQ render Do not calculate a current three-year price; preserve trial, renewal, refund, and tax-scope unknowns
Peloton All-Access Conflicting announced, setup, membership, and offer fields Do not normalize a current recurring price until the exact same-scope checkout is verified
Peloton App One/Peloton App+ Current accepted routes conflict or expose offer-specific/dynamic fields Do not normalize a three-year App price until exact checkout is verified
XF Connect Free with a qualifying XTERRA serial, otherwise $9.99/month or $99/year Treat free eligibility as conditional; paid path is a separate scenario

The JRNY membership page differentiates App and All-Access, billing periods, profile counts, and built-in-screen eligibility. The accepted Zwift membership FAQ rendered the current trial, renewal, refund, and profile rules but did not expose a current price during this recheck. The bounded JRNY versus Peloton App versus Zwift comparison is context for platform boundaries only. Peloton’s October 2025 official release is a dated price announcement, while the current setup, membership, and Hyatt offer routes expose conflicting or offer-specific fields. The Peloton App and All-Access prices therefore remain unnormalized for a current three-year total.

No-paid-subscription local path

The Schwinn connected-app page states that Schwinn connected products can deliver a full workout experience with zero subscriptions required. For this framework, that supports a local-console path with a paid-software line of $0 when the buyer deliberately excludes JRNY, Peloton, Zwift, and other paid services.

That result does not prove:

  • the product needs no wall power;
  • the buyer needs no internet for support, firmware, manuals, or optional features;
  • every metric is available locally;
  • no app, account, phone, or sensor will ever be useful;
  • future product behavior will never change;
  • hardware, tax, delivery, accessories, electricity, maintenance, and returns are zero.

No paid subscription required is not the same as no app, account, internet, or future service dependency.

Optional JRNY App path

JRNY App currently lists $11.99/month or $99/year, a two-month new-member trial, up to three profiles, and compatibility with supported mobile-device equipment rather than most BowFlex built-in touchscreen products. (JRNY membership details)

Three-year software arithmetic at current fields:

Monthly: $11.99 × 36 = $431.64
Annual:  $99.00 × 3  = $297.00
Difference:             $134.64

The $134.64 difference is arithmetic, not a savings guarantee. It assumes the same tier, price, access, billing availability, and feature set remain throughout the horizon. The free trial is excluded from the base because eligibility is buyer-specific and one-time.

Optional JRNY All-Access path

JRNY All-Access currently lists $19.99/month or $149/year, a two-month new-member trial, and up to six profiles. JRNY says it is required for the full experience on most BowFlex cardio products with built-in touchscreens. (JRNY membership details)

Monthly: $19.99 × 36 = $719.64
Annual:  $149.00 × 3 = $447.00
Difference:             $272.64

JRNY App and JRNY All-Access are not interchangeable. A cheaper mobile tier cannot be substituted for a built-in-screen requirement without exact equipment support. Conversely, All-Access should not be charged to an IC4 mobile-app scenario unless the buyer deliberately chooses a supported reason for it.

Optional Zwift path

The accepted Zwift membership FAQ currently exposes a 14-day trial for monthly memberships, no trial for annual memberships, a full-refund path for first-time annual subscribers who cancel within 30 days, monthly or yearly renewal behavior, and one profile per membership. It did not expose a current price field in the rendered page during the September 13 recheck.

Monthly price: not exposed in the accepted current render
Annual price: not exposed in the accepted current render
Three-year price arithmetic: withheld

The membership line also does not include a display device, trainer, smart bike, power meter, cadence sensor, heart-rate device, internet, tax, or maintenance. A buyer using an IC4 may still need to verify the exact connection and metric path; no price field in the accepted current render means the current Zwift subtotal remains unavailable.

Peloton App price conflict

Peloton’s October 2025 official release announced App One at $15.99/month, App+ at $28.99/month, and All-Access at $49.99/month effective in that announcement. The current Peloton membership page rendered dynamic $0/mo and $9.99/mo fields, while the setup and Hyatt offer routes expose offer-specific fields. These records do not provide a stable same-scope current U.S. checkout price.

The separate Peloton App compatibility article is context for app/device boundaries only; it does not convert the current price conflict into a compatibility or cost conclusion.

This package therefore does not calculate a three-year Peloton App One or App+ subtotal. A buyer must verify:

  • exact tier;
  • billing channel;
  • monthly or annual option;
  • trial eligibility;
  • current checkout price and tax;
  • equipment-class access limits;
  • supported metrics and device path;
  • renewal price.

A current subscription price is not a guaranteed renewal price.

Peloton integrated-hardware path

The Peloton home-trial page currently lists the Cross Training Bike at $1,695 and states that All-Access is required to access all Peloton content and applicable hardware features. The accepted setup page rendered an offer-specific $0/mo field during this recheck, not a stable current recurring checkout price. The official October 2025 release is retained as a dated announcement, not promoted as a current renewal quote.

Three-year All-Access arithmetic:

Hardware current field:  $1,695.00
All-Access current price: not normalized
Current three-year subtotal: unavailable

The dated three-year arithmetic implied by the October 2025 announcement is not used as a current-field subtotal here. Tax, delivery choice, assembly, shoes, mat, weights, heart-rate device, financing, internet, electricity, maintenance, return exposure, extended coverage, and future membership changes remain separate.

Peloton All-Access required for the full hardware experience does not mean every feature or entertainment service is included without additional accounts or conditions.

Conditional free-membership path

The XTERRA FB180 page displays a free XF Connect membership claim with the current hardware offer. The XF Connect page states that a qualifying serial number is required; without qualifying equipment, membership is $9.99/month or $99/year.

A free qualifying membership is not a lifetime zero-cost guarantee. The record must state:

  • exact purchased equipment and serial eligibility;
  • activation path;
  • whether a credit card is required;
  • profile count;
  • feature scope;
  • whether the equipment connects or the app is playback only;
  • what happens if eligibility or service terms change.

The free path and separately paid path are different scenarios.

Functional parity boundary

Hardware and software totals are comparable only when the buyer-required outcome is equivalent.

The comparison boundary is also distinct from the related Schwinn IC4 versus folding-bike comparison and fan-bike versus indoor-cycling-bike comparison; those pages do not establish a universal three-year cost winner.

Function IC4 local console IC4 + optional app Peloton integrated Bike FB180 + XF Connect
Local workout without paid software Documented by Schwinn Still possible if buyer preserves local path Full content/applicable integrated features require All-Access Local console exists; app membership is a separate content path
Instructor-led class library Not part of local console Depends on selected app/tier Central to All-Access path XF Connect content depends on eligibility or paid membership
Integrated hardware metrics Local console only Exact metric path varies Integrated Peloton hardware path Exact FB180 app connection must not be inferred from free membership wording
Automatic resistance/control Not established by cost record Platform/equipment-specific Hardware-feature dependent Not established by membership claim
Household profiles Hardware-console scope differs JRNY tier-dependent Peloton membership-specific XF Connect supports multiple users under current terms

Hardware paths with different functions are not automatically comparable. A $0 software line cannot be interpreted as equal service to an integrated subscription path.

Current three-year cost matrix

The table below repeats only current fields that were exposed and accepted on September 13, 2026. A price that was not exposed or was conflicting is not turned into zero; it remains unavailable. Tax and every other unknown named later stay outside the arithmetic.

Scenario Hardware input Software assumption Assumption-dependent subtotal Main limitation
IC4 local console $799–$899 official conflict $0 paid software $799–$899 Hardware price conflict; all non-software ownership costs remain
IC4 + JRNY App annual $799–$899 $99 × 3 = $297 $1,096–$1,196 Assumes current annual tier repeats and exact compatibility remains
IC4 + JRNY App monthly $799–$899 $11.99 × 36 = $431.64 $1,230.64–$1,330.64 Assumes current monthly price repeats
IC4 + Zwift annual $799–$899 Current price not exposed Complete subtotal unavailable Trial/renewal/refund rules observed; device/sensor/internet/tax path unresolved
IC4 + Zwift monthly $799–$899 Current price not exposed Complete subtotal unavailable Trial/renewal rules observed; current price and setup dependencies unresolved
IC4 + Peloton App $799–$899 Not normalized Complete subtotal unavailable Current App tier price conflict
Peloton Cross Training Bike + All-Access $1,695 Current recurring price not normalized Complete subtotal unavailable Conflicting announced/setup/offer fields; tax, accessories, delivery/assembly, return, future price unknown
FB180 + qualifying XF Connect $179.99 promotion or $249.99 reference Conditional $0 $179.99 or $249.99 Free eligibility and continuation conditional
FB180 + XF Connect annual $179.99 or $249.99 $99 × 3 = $297 $476.99 or $546.99 Hardware promotion/reference states are separate
FB180 + XF Connect monthly $179.99 or $249.99 $9.99 × 36 = $359.64 $539.63 or $609.63 Assumes paid monthly path and current price repeat

These are not product recommendations. The functional-parity test must run before any price comparison.

Software-only arithmetic

Service Monthly-current-field three-year assumption Annual-current-field three-year assumption Arithmetic difference
JRNY App $431.64 $297.00 $134.64
JRNY All-Access $719.64 $447.00 $272.64
Zwift Current price not exposed Current price not exposed Not calculated
XF Connect paid path $359.64 $297.00 $62.64
Peloton All-Access Current price not normalized No normalized annual field in this scenario Not calculated
Peloton App One/Peloton App+ Price conflict Price conflict Not calculated

A lower annual arithmetic amount is not a guaranteed saving. Cancellation rights, refund rules, eligibility, price changes, unused months, and feature changes can make the buyer’s outcome different. The current accepted Zwift route did not expose a price, so no Zwift annual-versus-monthly arithmetic is presented here.

Case: IC4 local console with no paid subscription

Scenario:

Hardware: exact IC4 from Schwinn direct
Hardware current field: $799–$899 official conflict
Paid software selected: none
Horizon: 36 months

Result:

Paid-software subtotal: $0
Current hardware-input range: $799–$899
Complete total: unavailable

The Schwinn connected-app page supports a local workout path without paid subscription. The result remains incomplete because tax, delivery, power, accessories, maintenance, repair, returns, and future product/service changes are not monetized.

Case: IC4 plus JRNY App annual billing

Hardware range: $799–$899
JRNY App: $99 × 3 = $297
Subtotal range: $1,096–$1,196

This assumes the buyer uses a supported mobile-device path, keeps the same tier, pays three annual charges, and does not depend on an ineligible built-in-screen configuration. The JRNY page must be rechecked before each purchase or renewal.

Case: IC4 plus JRNY App monthly billing

Hardware range: $799–$899
JRNY App: $11.99 × 36 = $431.64
Subtotal range: $1,230.64–$1,330.64

The monthly path may offer more cancellation flexibility, but this package does not monetize that flexibility. It also does not subtract the two-month trial because eligibility is conditional.

Case: IC4 plus Zwift annual billing

Hardware range: $799–$899
Zwift annual price: not exposed in accepted current FAQ render
Subtotal: unavailable
Tax: unknown

The Zwift membership FAQ supplies current trial, renewal, refund, and profile boundaries, but not a current price field in this recheck. The equipment/device connection path, display device, sensors, internet, tax, and metric support still require exact verification.

Case: IC4 plus Zwift monthly billing

Hardware range: $799–$899
Zwift monthly price: not exposed in accepted current FAQ render
Subtotal: unavailable
Tax: unknown

This scenario cannot repeat a current monthly price until the accepted current route exposes one. It is intentionally not described as a forecast.

Case: IC4 plus Peloton App

Hardware can be recorded at $799–$899, but the current Peloton App tier price cannot be normalized from the checked official pages. The official release and current membership route do not provide a stable same-scope current checkout record for this package.

Result:

Hardware input: $799–$899
Peloton App line: unknown due current official price state
Complete subtotal: unavailable

Class playback, cadence, power, speed, distance, and resistance remain separate feature fields; Article 38 does not use a subscription price to infer compatibility.

Case: Peloton Cross Training Bike plus All-Access

Cross Training Bike: $1,695
All-Access current recurring price: not normalized
Current-field subtotal: unavailable
Return exposure: route-specific and conditional

The Peloton home-trial route documents the current Cross Training Bike hardware field and the All-Access requirement. It also documents a $150 return fee for eligible Bike/Bike+ home-trial cases; that fee is not silently transferred to the Cross Training Bike. The setup route rendered an offer-specific $0/mo field during this recheck, while the dated investor release records an earlier announced price. A current same-scope recurring price is therefore unavailable.

The subtotal excludes tax, optional expert assembly, accessories, financing, internet, electricity, maintenance, return exposure, extended coverage, and future membership changes.

Case: XTERRA FB180 with qualifying XF Connect membership

FB180 current promotion: $179.99
FB180 reference field: $249.99
XF Connect membership: conditional $0 with qualifying serial

Possible current-field subtotal:

$179.99 promotion scenario
or
$249.99 reference-field scenario

The XF Connect page requires a qualifying serial number for the free path. The scenario must record activation and exact equipment eligibility. It cannot promise zero cost for the full horizon.

Case: XTERRA FB180 without qualifying free membership

Annual paid path:

$179.99 + ($99 × 3) = $476.99
$249.99 + ($99 × 3) = $546.99

Monthly paid path:

$179.99 + ($9.99 × 36) = $539.63
$249.99 + ($9.99 × 36) = $609.63

The FB180 product page and XF Connect page must be checked together. The app’s content value, equipment connection, user profiles, and future price are not inferred from these subtotals.

Trials and first-time offers

Trials are conditional exposures, not durable negative costs. Base scenarios exclude them unless the buyer proves eligibility and deliberately models the conversion date.

Current checked records include:

  • JRNY two-month new-member trial on both current tiers;
  • Zwift’s 14-day monthly trial, annual no-trial boundary, and first-time annual refund window;
  • Peloton App and partner offer fields that vary by route and are not treated as a current paid price;
  • Peloton 30-day eligible hardware home trial;
  • XF Connect conditional free membership with qualifying equipment rather than a time-limited trial.

Do not combine multiple one-time trials across a three-year base. Do not assume the buyer can repeat a trial after cancellation or change billing channel without consequence.

Tax treatment

Tax remains unknown until exact checkout or billing location supports it. The Zwift membership FAQ is retained for the billing/tax boundary, but the accepted current render did not expose a current price. Hardware and software may also have different tax treatment by jurisdiction and billing channel.

This article does not provide tax advice. It does not apply one national rate, copy a state average, or assume app-store and direct-web billing produce the same result.

Delivery and assembly

Hardware totals require exact delivery scope. The Schwinn shipping page describes delivery constraints and a $155 return-shipping field scoped to listed 430/490 Elliptical and 810 Treadmill cases; it does not prove that an IC4 order has that charge. Peloton’s setup page distinguishes self-assembly and expert-assembly choices for eligible equipment. XTERRA’s FB180 page currently displays free shipping, but destination eligibility still needs checkout verification.

Do not transfer delivery terms across brands, product classes, addresses, dates, or order paths.

Display devices, sensors, and accessories

The subscription line is incomplete when a platform requires or materially benefits from hardware beyond the cardio machine.

Possible incremental items include:

  • phone, tablet, TV, streaming device, or computer;
  • power meter, cadence sensor, speed sensor, heart-rate device, or smart trainer;
  • shoes, cleats, pedals, mat, weights, bottle holder, or device mount;
  • adapter, cable, battery, outlet, or network equipment;
  • protective case or stand used only for the workout setup.

A device already owned can be excluded only when the scenario states it is not an incremental purchase and that exclusion does not hide replacement or compatibility risk.

Internet and electricity

Connected classes and cloud features can require internet; local console use may not. The cost record should distinguish:

  • existing household internet with no incremental charge;
  • a paid upgrade purchased for the equipment;
  • mobile-data use;
  • required Wi-Fi hardware;
  • hardware electricity;
  • display-device electricity;
  • standby energy when evidenced.

No electricity amount is calculated here because exact average power, use hours, standby use, and buyer utility rate are missing. Unknown does not become zero merely because the product page does not publish consumption.

Maintenance and consumables

Possible three-year costs include batteries, cleaning materials, lubricant, pedal or cleat wear, seat or grip replacement, sensors, cables, adapters, and service parts. Frequency must come from an exact manual, service record, direct observation, or explicit buyer assumption.

This article does not invent a maintenance allowance or repair rate. A warranty does not prove that labor, freight, consumables, downtime, or every failure is covered.

Return and restocking exposure

Return exposure remains separate from the base ownership subtotal.

Path Current documentary exposure Arithmetic illustration
Schwinn IC4 at $799 Dated policy record allows a return within 30 days from delivery, return freight, and possible up-to-20% restocking in listed circumstances; the accepted route was unavailable/transport-limited on 2026-09-20 No fixed IC4 dollar amount is asserted; freight and policy applicability remain buyer-specific
Schwinn IC4 at $899 Same dated policy boundary; the accepted route was unavailable/transport-limited on 2026-09-20 No fixed IC4 dollar amount is asserted; freight and policy applicability remain buyer-specific
Peloton Cross Training Bike The current route documents a $150 return fee for eligible Bike/Bike+ home-trial cases, not this Cross Training Bike path Not applied to the Cross Training Bike
XTERRA FB180 at $179.99 Customer return freight plus 10% restocking in listed circumstances $18.00 rounded percentage component, plus freight
XTERRA FB180 at $249.99 Same conditional operator $25.00 rounded percentage component, plus freight

The dated Schwinn return policy, Peloton home-trial page, and XTERRA return policy use different triggers and conditions. The 2026-09-20 Schwinn route recheck showed the accepted policy route unavailable/transport-limited, so the earlier policy fields are dated snapshot context rather than newly confirmed terms. The Peloton $150 field is route-specific and is not silently transferred to the Cross Training Bike. These items belong in conditional exposure.

Cancellation, pause, renewal, and refunds

A three-year recurring-cost line must record:

  • billing channel;
  • renewal date;
  • cancellation effective date;
  • pause availability;
  • refund eligibility;
  • annual-plan refund rule;
  • feature loss after cancellation;
  • whether history or profiles remain;
  • whether the hardware has a local fallback.

The JRNY page says monthly subscribers can manage pause and cancellation through the relevant billing channel. The Zwift membership FAQ distinguishes monthly trial, monthly or yearly renewal, annual first-time refund treatment, and one-profile boundaries, but the accepted current render did not expose a price. Peloton App, All-Access, direct, Apple, Google, and promotional billing must not be conflated.

Financing boundary

A monthly hardware payment is not the purchase price. Record:

  • cash price;
  • amount financed;
  • APR;
  • finance charge or total of payments;
  • term and payment count;
  • down payment;
  • taxes, delivery, accessories, and membership included or separate;
  • interest treatment on return;
  • late or missed-payment terms only when relevant.

Peloton currently advertises financing subject to eligibility, but this article does not reconstruct a finance charge from a marketing payment. The buyer must use the exact lender disclosure.

Household profiles and per-user interpretation

JRNY currently differentiates up to three profiles for JRNY App and up to six for All-Access. XF Connect currently documents multiple users. Peloton App and integrated memberships have their own profile rules. Zwift membership is account-based.

Do not divide a subtotal by household members unless:

  • the tier legally and technically permits the profiles;
  • every user can access the required hardware and features;
  • the horizon and use assumption are explicit;
  • the per-user figure is clearly a derived view rather than a discount or quote.

A lower per-user arithmetic number does not establish higher value.

Price-change sensitivity

Because software prices can change within 36 months, show a sensitivity rather than hiding the risk.

For a monthly membership:

three-year membership = current monthly price × months at current price
                      + changed monthly price × remaining months

For example, a $5 monthly increase beginning in month 13 adds:

$5 × 24 months = $120

This is a synthetic sensitivity, not a prediction. The largest uncertainty can also be hardware-price conflict, free-membership eligibility, device cost, return freight, or early cancellation.

Missing and conflicting inputs

Material unresolved fields in the current package include:

  • IC4 $799/$899 official price conflict;
  • stable current Peloton Peloton App One and Peloton App+ checkout prices;
  • tax for every buyer-specific hardware and software transaction;
  • exact delivery and assembly selection;
  • device, sensor, accessory, and internet increments;
  • electricity and maintenance;
  • repair and parts;
  • trial eligibility;
  • a current Zwift price field in the accepted FAQ render;
  • a stable same-scope current Peloton App or All-Access checkout price;
  • future renewal prices and feature changes;
  • Schwinn return-freight amount and whether any restocking condition applies to the exact order;
  • return freight and exact restocking applicability;
  • financing disclosures;
  • disposal and resale;
  • exact functional parity across the compared paths.

Conflicting official values remain separate. They are not averaged or resolved by choosing the lower number.

When a known three-year subtotal is available

A known subtotal may be published when:

  • exact hardware and software identities are locked;
  • current prices, currency, market, seller, billing channel, and checked date are recorded;
  • all charged periods in the scenario are explicit;
  • included and excluded functions are disclosed;
  • unknowns remain outside the number;
  • conditional return or cancellation exposure is separate;
  • the result is labeled as current-field arithmetic, not a quote or forecast.

The number can still be useful even when the complete total is unavailable.

When complete total remains unavailable

Complete total remains unavailable when any material class is missing or conflicts, including:

  • tax;
  • required device, sensor, accessory, delivery, or assembly;
  • subscription eligibility or price;
  • maintenance and repair;
  • electricity;
  • financing;
  • return freight or service exposure;
  • terminal disposal or resale treatment.

Do not force an exact total to make a comparison look decisive.

When scenarios are not comparable

Two paths are not comparable when they differ in required function, hardware ownership, included services, household access, billing basis, tax treatment, horizon, or evidence coverage.

Examples:

  • IC4 local console versus Peloton integrated classes and metrics;
  • JRNY App mobile path versus JRNY All-Access built-in-screen path;
  • Zwift membership without the required trainer/sensor/device cost versus a complete smart-bike setup;
  • qualifying free XF Connect membership versus a non-qualifying paid account;
  • promotion hardware price versus a normal/reference hardware price without a shared price state.

The correct result is “not comparable pending evidence,” not a winner.

When no purchase or defer is valid

No purchase or defer is valid when:

  • paid software is mandatory but the buyer rejects recurring cost;
  • the local fallback is not verified;
  • the app/tier price cannot be locked;
  • hardware and software compatibility is unresolved;
  • the buyer lacks a supported device, sensor, account, internet path, or billing region;
  • return exposure is unacceptable or unknown;
  • a price change would make the scenario unacceptable;
  • the buyer-required outcome cannot be matched at evidence parity.

A decision framework should preserve this outcome rather than push the buyer toward the cheapest visible subtotal.

Recommendation and value boundary

This package does not name a cheapest, best-value, most flexible, or safest path.

Documentary observations are narrower:

  • a local IC4 path can make the paid-software line zero while preserving a local workout experience;
  • current JRNY annual arithmetic is lower than repeating its current monthly field for 36 months, but annual commitment and refund rules differ; Zwift annual/monthly arithmetic is withheld because no current price field was exposed;
  • Peloton integrated hardware carries a large recurring All-Access line that buys a different integrated function set;
  • qualifying XTERRA hardware can produce a conditional free XF Connect line, but eligibility and future terms must be verified;
  • Peloton App price conflict blocks a normalized three-year App subtotal in this package.

A recommendation requires the buyer’s required functions, exact equipment, device path, cost classes, risk tolerance, and current checkout evidence.

Next step

Create one worksheet for each exact path. Record hardware state, software tier, billing periods, tax, delivery, devices, sensors, accessories, internet, electricity, maintenance, financing, returns, fallback, and every unknown. Recheck all volatile prices and policies immediately before purchase or publication.

The body uses the verified live Article 8, 31, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, and 45 destinations required for this release. Methodology

This analysis applies the current FitFootprint pricing-analysis format and the Article 8 cost taxonomy without presenting a general total-cost standard. It uses a fixed 36-month horizon, separate current price and promotion states, evidence/timing labels, current-field repetition as an explicit assumption, four-output cost reporting, sensitivity, conditional return exposure, and fail-closed comparability.

The source set is restricted to exactly fifteen accepted official U.S. manufacturer, platform, and support routes checked September 13, 2026. No affiliate, merchant, paid, or tracked link is included. No direct use or pairing occurred. The 2026-09-20 source-status recheck found the accepted Schwinn return-policy route unavailable/transport-limited; its earlier fields remain dated context, not a current policy confirmation. This Article-38-specific method records current-at-that-check fields, explicit 36-month repetition assumptions, conditional exposure, unknowns, and fail-closed comparability. It does not turn these records into a complete total or a current service guarantee.

For a documented scenario, use the Home Fitness Equipment Total-Cost Calculator; it keeps known, assumed, conditional, terminal, and unknown amounts separate.
